Arboriculture 101: Theory and Practice
LAN 252 — Planting Design Principles | King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi
This lecture was delivered as part of LAN 252 (Planting Design Principles), an undergraduate landscape architecture course at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). It introduces the science and craft of arboriculture, building the biological literacy and practical judgment that landscape architects need to make informed decisions about trees in designed landscapes. Topics covered include tree biology and the CODIT model, proper planting and pruning technique, long-term maintenance, tree risk assessment, and urban forestry.

The lecture emphasizes that good decisions made early in a tree's life compound over decades into resilient, low-maintenance landscapes. It closes with a real-world case study of a residential subdivision project in Maryland, where natural resource inventory, forest stand delineation, tree protection planning, and conceptual design were integrated from the ground up, showing students what this work looks like in professional practice.
